Shas MK Yigal Guetta officially handed over his letter of resignation to Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein Sunday amid the pressure from rabbis and members of his political party because he attended the wedding of his gay nephew about two years ago. Guetta’s resignation will go into effect after 48 hours. It is expected that during this time, Shas officials will try to convince him to remain in the Knesset as a member of the party.
As reported by JOL last week, members of the party are deeply divided over the scandal. Although Guetta has already officially informed Shas chairman Arye Dery of his decision to resign, his fate in the party has not been finalized. None of the members of Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah, the party’s body of ultimate authority, signed the letter demanding Guetta’s dismissal.
Rabbi Shimon Baadani, a council member, opposes the firing of Guetta and has said he views Guetta’s decision to attend the wedding as an act of “embracing his family.” However, others, including Rabbi Shalom Cohen, are furious with Guetta for disclosing that he attended the gay wedding in such a public manner.
