Four 9th grade students from the Western Valley School of Kibbutz Yifat visited the Nahal Zippori area of Galilee and discovered a very rare piece of History.
The high schoolers, Ido Kadosh, Ofir Sigal, Dotan Miller and Harel Grin found a 1600 yr old gold coin bearing the image of Roman Emperor Theodosius II who ruled the Byzantine Empire 1,600 years ago.
The coin’s front depicts Emperor Theodosius II and the back shows the goddess Victory holding the Staff of the Cross. The emperor’s decree led to the suffering of the Jewish people, and the abolishment of the century-old Sanhedrin (Jewish legal council).
The boys did not keep the treasure, rather they elected on their own to hand it over to the Israel Antiquities Authority.
