The Syrian Army has officially accused Israel of carrying out the overnight airstrike in Syria and is threatening that there will be “dangerous repercussions.” Meanwhile, a former senior Israeli intelligence official said that if the attack was in fact carried out by the IDF, “it would be a commendable and moral action by Israel against the slaughter in Syria.”

Amid the Syrian and Lebanese reports of an Israeli airstrike against a missile and chemical weapons facility near Hama, the Syrian Army warned that there will be “dangerous repercussions,” calling the attack an aggressive move that threatens the “security and stability in the region.” The army has accused Israeli aircraft of carrying out the attack, which claimed the lives of two people and resulted in severe damage.
Israeli officials have neither confirmed nor denied the allegations, stating that they do not comment on foreign reports. However, senior Israeli officials have in the past confirmed IDF attacks targeting weapon convoys in Syria that were on their way to Hezbollah.
Nevertheless, if the reports about Israel being responsible for the attack are accurate, the overnight airstrike would represent a change in Israel’s defense strategy because Hama is located in the northwestern part of Syria. In the past, all attacks carried out by the Israeli Air Force in Syria were against targets located in a more southern part of the country.

Former head of the Israeli Military Intelligence Directorate Amos Yadlin wrote on Twitter that the airstrike was not routine, explaining that it “targeted a Syrian military-scientific center for the development and manufacture of, among other things, precision missiles.”
“The factory that was targeted in Masyaf produces the chemical weapons and barrel bombs that have killed thousands of Syrian civilians,” he continued. “If the attack was conducted by Israel, it would be a commendable and moral action by Israel against the slaughter in Syria.”
A few weeks ago, Israel warned that Iran is building missile factories in Syria and Lebanon and Israeli defense officials stated that the growing Iranian presence in the region is a strategic threat to Israel.
