While the Iraqi Army and Kurdish forces are approaching Mosul, the West is attempting to resolve the crisis in Syria. Yesterday evening (Wednesday), Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he is ready to extend the period during which his country will cease its airstrikes on Aleppo.
Putin’s announcement comes after he met with French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Moscow proposed to speed up the process of drafting a new Syrian constitution so that a preliminary election may be held.
Despite Putin’s announcement, Hollande and Merkel said that their countries might still impose sanctions on Russia.
Merkel said that Russia has been playing a major role in the deteriorating situation in Syria. Merkel also said that the discussion with Putin was very serious.
