In a harsh response to the new bill promoted by Deputy Minister Meir Porush, which calls to cancel the body that currently supervises education in the Haredi sector and to establish a Council of Sages in its place, Education Minister Naftali Bennett stressed: “There will be no change in the status of the Haredi District.”

A serious political dispute erupted today (Tuesday) between Education Minister Naftali Bennett and his Deputy Minister Meir Porush regarding the issue of Haredi education. Deputy Minister Porush asked to establish a Council of Sages that will replace the Education Ministry’s Haredi District, which currently supervises education in the Haredi sector, enraging Bennett who was quick to stress: “There will be no change in the status of the Haredi District.”

In recent weeks, Porush has made efforts to formulate a bill for the establishment of a special council for the Haredi education system in which members from all across the Haredi sector will take part, in the place of the Haredi District established by former Education Minister Shai Piron. “Porush is trying to take the students years back, to isolate and segregate them from other Israeli students,” the Education Ministry warned in response to Porush’s bill. “The move will put an end to the integration of ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israeli society.”
