A photograph taken by an amateur photographer reached newspapers throughout the Czech Republic yesterday (Wednesday) and today spread to news outlets around the world. In the photo taken during May 1 demonstrations, a right-wing neo-Nazi activist can be seen facing off with a counter-demonstration attended by members of the scouts youth movement. One of them, a 16-year-old girl named Lucie Myslíková, was not deterred by the intimidating leather getup or by the threatening message and bravely confronted him.
“She was standing tall and she’s 16 years old and she stood proud and made some profound arguments,” said Vladimír Čičmanec, who took the picture, in a conversation with CNN. While the neo-Nazis staged a demonstration against immigrants, Lucie arrived in uniform with another seven or eight members of the Scouts to protest. The Scouts sang and played instruments to counter the extremist messages from the other side.
The World Organization of the Scout Movement shared Čičmanec’s photo on its Facebook page with the caption: People from all walks of life, and #Scouts among them, came to the streets during an extreme right march yesterday, to express their support for values of diversity, peace and understanding. Creating a better world!”
Čičmanec is a computer technician by profession who also took part in the demonstration against the neo-Nazi activists in the city of Brno. “We wanted to show the neo-Nazis that they are not welcomed here,” he explained.
