Harish, Israel’s newest planned city, continues to take shape as the construction of the city’s Area B has begun. Compared to the successfully planned city of Modi’in, Harish, which in December 2015, was a town of approximately 300 families and is projected to reach a population of 100,000 within the next decade. The city, which was approved by the Israeli Cabinet in January 2016 with a commitment of 1 billion NIS, was defined by the Netanyahu government as a “national priority community.” The first residents moved into Harish in May 2016. Harish is approximately a 45-minute drive north of Tel Aviv, located right near Highway 6, Israel’s major trans-national highway, and will eventually have a railway station. Caesarea and Hadera are just a few of the nearby cities.
The city’s Orthodox mayor Yitzhak Keshet shared his vision for Harish with the media, stating that he sees his city becoming one of pluralism, sustainability and community. In the words of one reporter, the city will be “a mix of religious and secular, Jew and Arab, urban hipster and immigrant.” The Architectural firm of Mansfeld-Kehat was hired to design the city. Architect Haim Kehat, stated that “every house is no more than a five-minute walk from a school, park, playground and grocery store.” Kehat added that “there are speed bumps at most intersections, as well as 17 kilometers (10 miles) of bike paths snaking through the city and lots of green space.” The goal, according to Kehat, is “nothing less than for Harish’s streets to be alive.”
In February of 2016, the plans were approved for the green areas of the city, which include 66 parks and a central park that will cover an area of 250 plus acres. The central park will be spectacular with “pocket gardens” that will allow for isolated activities such as yoga, meditation tai chi and so on. The children’s areas will include playgrounds with slides, ladders and entertainment facilities as well as ball fields.
The southern part of the park will integrate ecological ponds and lawns. The highlight of the park is an open theater that will include seating for 5,000 people. The park will include a network of paths and tracks for the whole family and biking trails. The north part of the park will feature an observation point with panoramic views across the city.
Other notable features of the city include a special site consolidating all emergency services. Harish is being built as a smart city, with full Wi-Fi coverage and its own fiber optic cables, LED streetlights with sensors, camera-equipped lampposts and smart trash cans that will signal trucks through the Internet when they need to be emptied.
