It contains 10 tons of explosives, is GPS-guided and dropped from a Hercules transport aircraft or a B-2 stealth bomber using a parachute-straight to the target. This is the GBU-43, known as the Mother of All Bombs, that the US dropped on an ISIS stronghold in Afghanistan for the first time in history.

Earlier today (Thursday), CNN news first reported that the US used the GBU-43, known as Mother of All Bombs (MOAB), for the first time in history. The target was an ISIS stronghold in eastern Afghanistan. Although a conventional weapon, its damage is immeasurably great and is considered to be the most powerful non-nuclear weapon in the world other than the Russian developed FOAB- Father of All Bombs, which is 4 times more powerful than its sister.

The MOAB contains 10 tons of explosives. It is GPS-guided and is dropped from a Hercules transport aircraft or a B-2 stealth bomber due to its massive size. After dropping, it parachutes towards the target.

The massive bomb was developed in 2003 by the US, following the war in Iraq and was tested in a Florida military base. The US government administration at the time decided that the strength demonstrated by the Iraqi military resistance did not justify the use of the bomb and since then Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama have not ordered its use.

Several hours after the initial publication, US President Donald Trump congratulated the operation and called it a “very successful mission.”
