On Thursday, Saudi Arabia launched its first Comic Con event. The three-day festival concluded on Saturday. According to reports, some 20,000 Saudis visited the recreation center in Jeddah where the event was held.
Alcohol, public movie theaters and school music lessons are banned in the Wahabi-Sunni country but this event was initiated by the Saudi government’s General Entertainment Authority in order to bring more entertainment to the country. While men and women are generally segregated in the country, men and women walked side-by-side within the Jeddah recreation center once they entered through separate entrances.
According to attendees, some of the people inside the center were dressed up like their favorite Japanese anime characters. However, most of the attendees were wearing Western clothes.
