The US president told NBC that the dismissed FBI director was “a showboat” who had put the FBI “in turmoil,” insisting that his decision to fire Comey had nothing to do with the investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

US President Donald Trump told NBC Thursday that he was planning to fire FBI Director James Comey regardless of the Justice Department’s recommendation.
“Look, he’s a showboat, he’s a grandstander, the FBI has been in turmoil,” Trump said in the interview. “You take a look at the FBI a year ago, it was in virtual turmoil, less than a year ago — it hasn’t recovered from that.”
Trump insisted that he had never tried to persuade Comey to end the investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US election. “If Russia did anything, I want to know that,” he said.
