The US President has once again sent shockwaves across the country when he referred to Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as ‘shithole countries’ during a discussion on immigration at the Oval Office.

During a Thursday meeting with lawmakers on immigration at the Oval Office, US President Donald Trump demanded to know why the US is allowing for people from “shithole countries” to enter the country.

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump asked after being told of a proposal to restore protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as part of a bipartisan immigration deal.

Trump’s remark drew harsh criticism from current and former government officials. “This is racism, plain and simple, and we need to call it that,” tweeted Democratic Rep. Tim Walz of Minnesota.

Republican Rep. Mia Love of Utah, whose family is originally from Haiti, called Trump’s comments “unkind, divisive, elitist, and fly in the face of our nation’s values.” “My parents came from one of those countries, but proudly took an oath of allegiance to the United States, and took on the responsibilities of everything that being a citizen comes with,” she said in a statement.
