The U.S. Senate voted on Tuesday to approve that former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial is lawful, with 56 senators voting yes and 44 against.
While a sitting president has never been impeached in the United States before, Trump’s second impeachment trial has been successfully moved into session by the Tuesday Senate vote.
Trump’s legal defense team has argued that impeaching a private citizen is not legitimate. In contrast, Democrats counter that there should be no “January exception” and that from the first to the last day in office, a president must be kept responsible for all his actions.
Trump is facing his second Senate impeachment trial following allegations from House Democrats of .inciting rebellion during the Capitol riot that left five people dead, becoming the first U.S. president to be impeached twice by the House of Representatives. However, the former president denied any responsibility, slamming the impeachment as a continuation of a conspiracy and a witch hunt.
