The White House announced that US President Donald Trump will present a review of US policy in Afghanistan and South Asia. According to the statement, Trump will make his speech this evening (Monday).
Since entering office in January, Trump’s administration has been building a new long-term strategy on the war in Afghanistan, which started 16 years ago. Hours earlier, US Secretary of Defense James Mattis stated that Trump has reached a decision but declined to provide further details. “He wants to be the one to announce it to the American people,” Mattis said. “I’ll stand silent until then.”
The war in Afghanistan began in 2001 in response to the September 11 attacks by al-Qaeda. Since then, the US has lost approximately 3,000 soldiers, military advisers and citizens in the war. It is difficult to predict Trump’s strategic plan. However, Commander of the US Afghanistan Forces John Nicholson implied that the administration will most likely adopt the Pentagon’s recommendation not to leave the country.
