US President Donald Trump is expected to unveil on Monday his new national security strategy (NSS), which will reportedly emphasize that Israel is not the cause of the problems in the Middle East. The outline will also give precedence to US sovereignty as opposed to international alliances.
According to the Associated Press, the document asserts: “[F]or generations the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has been understood as the prime irritant preventing peace and prosperity in the region. Today, the threats from radical jihadist terrorist organizations and the threat from Iran are creating the realization that Israel is not the cause of the region’s problems. States have increasingly found common interests with Israel in confronting common threats.”
On the environmental front, Trump reportedly removed climate change from the list of existing threats. Instead, the outline is expected to emphasize the importance of national interests in a world of economic and political competitiveness. The strategy will focus on an “America first” approach, even at the expense of international alliances, which will be promoted only if they are reciprocal.
