The citizens of eight countries will find it either impossible or difficult to enter the US, according to the new travel restrictions announced by Washington last night. “Making America Safe is my number one priority,” explained US President Donald Trump after the restrictions were revealed.

Washington revealed Sunday evening the new travel restrictions that US President Donald Trump has approved. The restrictions apply to the citizens of eight countries who wish to enter the US. In addition to Somalia, Yemen, Syria, Libya and Iran, which are already facing travel limits due to the current ban, Trump placed North Korea, Chad and Venezuela on the new list.

The new restrictions vary by country. For instance, North Koreans and Syrians are completely banned from entering the US while only citizens of Venezuela who are connected to the government will face travel restrictions.

“Making America Safe is my number one priority. We will not admit those into our country we cannot safely vet,” Trump wrote on Twitter shortly after his administration announced the new restrictions. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that Trump “is carrying out his duty to protect the American people.”

The new restrictions were designed to replace the current travel ban. Trump’s controversial immigration ban will be discussed by the US Supreme Court next month. Among the criticism hurled at the ban is that it is racist and targets only Muslims. Trump may have added the non-Muslim nations to the new restrictions as a response to this claim.
