Socrates once said, “When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser.” If one is following the media coverage in the Weekly Blitz in recent days, this ancient wisdom that was expressed by Socrates becomes increasingly self-evident. In recent days, the Weekly Blitz has been publishing numerous articles slandering Hindu human rights activist Shipan Kumer Basu and Mendi Safadi, who formerly served as Minister Ayoob Kara’s Chief of Staff and who presently heads the Safadi Center for International Diplomacy, Research, Human Rights and Public Relations.
They made all sorts of fictitious and outrageous claims against Basu, Safadi and everyone that is associated with them. They did not even spare journalists who write about them. In order to set the record straight, the World Hindu Struggle Committee, which is run by Shipan Kumer Basu, is officially registered as an NGO in India. Neither Mendi Safadi nor Shipan Kumer Basu have any connections with Hamas or Hezbollah. To the contrary, both of them greatly disdain radical Islam and how Islamist ideology stands behind not only the persecution of Hindus but also Jews, Kurds, Yezidis, Druze and numerous other peoples across the Muslim world. Safadi himself has built up a career for himself standing up against ISIS, Hamas and Iranian aggression in the Middle East region. He has especially been active in assisting the Druze and Kurds in Syria.
While Basu is friends with Kazi Azizu Huq on Facebook and in the past was a co-worker of his in an organization that he did not run, he is also friends with 5,000 other individuals, many of them associated with various opposition groups to the Sheikh Hasina government. He maintains a Facebook connection with him because he believes as a Hindu rights activist, it is important to build alliances with other individuals opposed to the ruling Bangladeshi government. He does not support his views on Israel and the Jewish people in any way, shape or form. Furthermore, Huq is not part of the World Hindu Struggle Committee and does not translate material written by Basu into English. Basu has a staff member who performs that function for him but it is not Huq. Either way, Safadi is not connected to Huq in any way, shape or form.
Sabita Basu, the wife of Shipan Kumer Basu, does not have any official role in the World Hindu Struggle Committee. Therefore, she is not an accomplice to anything. To go after Basu’s wife merely because she is his life partner is something that only someone really ugly would do. Furthermore, within India, Basu is not a fugitive and is not connected to any sort of illegal activity. For this reason, the Indian Police have never interrogated Basu about any of the allegations that the Weekly Blitz made against him. Basu proclaimed if the Weekly Blitz has any real evidence against him, then they should present evidence instead of slandering him in the media.
And in Israel, Safadi has an honored status. He has numerous friends in the Likud and the Israeli Knesset. In the past, he did work for the Israeli government when he served as Minister Ayoob Kara’s Chief of Staff but even though he is no longer working for them, he has maintained a positive connection with them. Numerous media outlets rush to do interviews with Safadi for they know he is a reliable source of information and has a unique perspective on the current situation in the Muslim world to offer. Safadi is not only an honorable and clean figure in Israel but also a tireless advocate against the radical Islam and in favor of promoting relations between Israel and other peoples across the Muslim world. Just because he is not Jewish does not mean that he doesn’t have ties to the Israeli government.
Israel is a democracy. There are many non-Jews who are working for the benefit of the State of Israel and Safadi is one of them. To slander Safadi, who is tirelessly working to advance the human rights of various minority groups worldwide, merely because he is helping Basu internationally is not only a low thing to do but it is an attack upon all advocates of human rights across the globe.
Regarding Aslam Chowdhury, he is a man who has tirelessly worked in order to advance the rights of minorities within Bangladesh. He was the Governor of the Lions Club International, which works to help less fortunate people and to advance human rights. Chowdhury is presently in prison merely because of his activism and the fact that he met with an Israeli. It is outrageous to speak out against a man that due to his imprisonment cannot defend himself. He is being persecuted merely due to his human rights activism with the Lions Club International.
And why is the Weekly Blitz attacking journalists who are merely seeking to expose the truth regarding what is happening in Bangladesh? It appears that the raison d’etre for this slanderous campaign by the Weekly Blitz against Basu, Safadi and all of his associates and various journalists that interviewed them rests on the anger expressed by the Weekly Blitz against the fact that Safadi seeks to bring Sheikh Hasina to the International Criminal Court at The Hague for the human rights abuses that she has implemented against minorities. The Weekly Blitz is also greatly disturbed how both Safadi and Basu have managed to attract the attention of various media outlets, both in Israel and the US, on the issues that are important to them.
However, instead of responding to the serious allegations that the Hindus of Bangladesh are being massacred, raped, abducted, forcefully converted to Islam, having their homes seized and looted, having their holy places desecrated and are being slowly ethnically cleansed from the country, the Weekly Blitz chooses instead to slander the human rights advocates and journalists who are working tireless to advance a better future for the Hindus of Bangladesh.
Before they make an even greater fool of themselves, by dragging their site from being a respectable publication that discusses radical Islam in Asia and Bangladeshi-Israeli relations to merely a tabloid newspaper that spreads blatantly false accusations that are not substantiated, they should learn that slander is the tool of the coward. If they truly want to make a difference, instead of attacking human rights activists and journalists in the ugliest manner possible, they should be dealing with the issues that may result in Sheikh Hasina being dragged to The Hague and call upon the Bangladeshi authorities to reform how they are presently treating minorities.
