Union for Reform Judaism President Rabbi Rick Jacobs harshly criticized the Israeli government’s decision to suspend the plan to build an egalitarian section at the Western Wall and the passing of the Conversion Law.
“The two decisions around the Kotel and the Conversion Bill literary pushed the Jews of the diaspora away,” he said. “What was said to us yesterday loudly and clearly was that the State of Israel will continue to delegitimize you. That is not only hurtful, it is wrong and it is a strategic danger to the well-being of the State of Israel.”

“There is a limit to how much the government decisions can push us away and then five minutes later, ask us to do X or Y,” Jacobs added. “You can’t actually have those two together, so this is a moment where we are saying loudly and clearly, it’s enough.”

When asked whether he blames Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the decision to suspend the plan for the Kotel, he said: “The government decision a year and a half ago was led by the prime minister. So, we’ve worked closely with him and yet the calculation of a coalition, you know, set of constraints leads him to choose the needs of the ultra-Orthodox.”
