The US State Department spokesman claimed that Yisrael Beiteinu leader Avigdor Lieberman’s new appointment “raises legitimate questions about the direction” of the government.

US State Department spokesman Mark Toner spoke tonight (Wednesday) about Lieberman’s new appointment and said that it raises concerns about the Israeli government. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to the security of Israel,” said Toner. “Ultimately, we’re going to judge this government based on its actions.”
“We also know that many of its ministers have said they oppose a two-state solution,” noted Toner. “We’ve seen reports from Israel describing it as the most right-wing coalition in Israel’s history. This raises legitimate questions about the direction it may be headed in and what kind of policies it may adopt. We are going to work with this government as we have worked with every Israeli government that preceded it with the goal of strengthening cooperation.”
Not only did officials in the US respond to Lieberman’s appointment as the Defense Minister. During a speech to mark the 16th anniversary of the IDF’s withdrawal from Southern Lebanon, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah called Lieberman “arrogant and crazy.”
“In occupied Palestine, the arrogant and crazy Lieberman is the war minister [Minister of Defense] in Netanyahu’s radical government,” stated Nasrallah in his speech. “What does that mean? I don’t want to get ahead of the interpretations.”
