In an unprecedented move, US President Donald Trump has announced his decision to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group. They now join the likes of ISIS, Hamas, and other groups on the U.S. list of terrorist groups.
“This unprecedented step, led by the Department of State, recognizes the reality that Iran is not only a State Sponsor of Terrorism, but that the IRGC actively participates in, finances, and promotes terrorism as a tool of statecraft,” Trump said in a White House statement,” said the US President.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps was formed after the triumph of the Islamic Revolution of 1979 to protect the theocratic regime led by the ayatollahs. Is the most powerful military organization in Iran even more than the Iranian armed forces.
In recent years, the United States has imposed sanctions on dozens of entities and individuals affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, but never directly classified the organization to be a terror group.
Trump acknowledged that his decision marks “the first time that the United States has ever named a part of another government as,” but is now making it clear that his administration “underscores the fact that Iran’s actions are fundamentally different from those of other governments”.
“If you are doing business with the IRGC, you will be bankrolling terrorism,” said Trump.
According to The Wall Street Journal, many in the CIA and Pentagon are very worried that this move could lead to reprisals against US troops in the Middle East.
Reacting to the news before it became official, IRGC Chief Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said:
“If the U.S. takes this step and endangers our national security we will take reciprocal measures, based on the policies of the Islamic Republic”.
