Following their first face-to-face meeting at the G20 Summit on Saturday, Putin expressed hope that Trump was ‘satisfied’ with his denial of Russian election meddling. The US ambassador to the UN, however, offers a different version of events: “Everybody knows that Russia meddled in our elections… yes, we know you did it, cut it out.”

While US President Donald Trump claimed that his long meeting with Putin yesterday (Saturday) was “excellent” and Putin expressed hopes that Trump was convinced that Russia did not intervene in the elections, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nicky Hailey presented a completely different version of events. In an interview with CNN, Haley said that Trump confronted Putin head-on during their meeting at the G20 Summit and demanded that he stop interfering.

“Everybody knows that Russia meddled in our elections,” Hailey said, despite Trump’s statement just two ago that “it could be that the Russians did it and maybe someone else.” Hailey added that Trump went into the meeting with Putin “to basically look him in the eye, let him know that yes, we know you meddled in our elections. Yes we know you did it, cut it out.”

Following the meeting between the presidents at the summit, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Russian reporters that President Trump had accepted Putin’s statements denying Russian involvement. This, Haley said, “is Russia trying to save face and they can’t. They can’t. Any country needs to know that there are consequences when they get involved in our elections and I think that’s why it’s good that the investigations are going on.”

Haley declined to comment on the question of what penalties Moscow would face for intervening in the elections and said that “I think you’re going to have to ask the president.”
