According to a U.S. official, the new electronic device ban for certain flights was established after it was discovered that al-Qaeda has developed the ability to conceal explosive materials in the batteries of some electronic devices. A U.S. official stated on Wednesday morning that it was decided to ban electronic devices larger than a cellphone on flights departing from certain countries after new intelligence was obtained. According to the official, al-Qaeda has developed the ability to conceal explosive materials in the batteries of the same electronic devices.

After the U.S. announced the ban, Britain stated that it will also implement the new policy. According to a statement released by the British Prime Minister’s Office, flights to the UK from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia will be affected by the new policy.

In response to the new U.S. policy, Turkish Airlines stated that passengers traveling with the airline from Israel to any destination in America will not be permitted to board the plane with laptops.

“We kindly inform our passengers that any electronic or electrical devices larger than a cell phone or smart phone (except medical devices) must not be transported on board in our flights arriving to the US destinations,” Turkish Airlines said in a statement released on its website. “However, those passengers will be easily able to transport their mentioned devices in the baggage hold area of the aircraft.”
