The Pentagon has announced its plan to expand the nuclear capabilities of the US in the face of a growing threat from Russia.

In a policy statement entitled the Nuclear Posture Review, published on Friday, the Pentagon proposed to develop new, small atomic bombs that can be launched from ballistic-missile submarines and warships.

“Expanding US tailored response options will raise the nuclear threshold and help ensure that potential adversaries perceive no possible advantage in limited nuclear escalation, making nuclear weapons employment less likely,” the document said. “Our strategy will ensure Russia understands that any use of nuclear weapons, however limited, is unacceptable.”

Critics of the document accuse the Trump administration of violating non-proliferation agreements, voicing concern that it might lead both nations to act impetuously.
