The armies of the United States and South Korea are expected to conduct a joint naval drill this coming week amid rising tensions with North Korea over a recent nuclear test.

The drill, which will take place in the Sea of Japan, is expected to be launched on October 16 and last 10 days. The US Navy said in a statement that the drill is designed to promote “communications, interoperability, and partnership” between the two militaries.

The USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier and two US destroyers will be taking part in the drill alongside South Korean vessels, the US 7th Fleet said.

Pyongyang responded to the report through its state-run KCNA news agency, which said, “If the US imperialists and the South Korean puppets ignite an aggressive nuclear war against us, it would only advance their own demise.”
