Secret US aircraft lands after 2 years in space
The US Air Force’s unmanned spacecraft, X-37B, returned yesterday (Sunday) from a 718-day secret mission – 44 days longer than its previous record mission. “Our team has been preparing for this event for several years,” Brig. Gen Wayne Monteith stated.
The aircraft landing was accompanied by a sonic boom, which rattled the ground and awakened east-central Floridians from their slumber a bit before 8:00 AM. “Thought somebody crashed into my garage,” a local resident wrote on Twitter. “It was just a sonic boom. Thanks @NASA for the scare!”

The X-37B, which looks like a small plane, made history when it landed for the first time in Florida at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center rather than in California.
The big question as to what the aircraft did in space for so long has remained a huge mystery. The US Air Force claims that the aircraft performs “risk reduction, experimentation and concept of operations development for reusable space vehicle technologies.”
