Nothing could have prepared Jan Feferbaum, a cadet at the Beit Shemesh police academy who lives in Israel on his own, for this touching surprise his friends gave him. For weeks, they were secretly collecting money in order to fly Jan’s mother from Brazil so she could attend his graduation ceremony.

“I had no idea this was happening,” Jan said in an interview for Channel 2 News. “It was a complete surprise.” Inspector Oren Sasson, Jan’s commander during his basic training course, added, “We were very happy and excited for him. It was a very moving ceremony. When we saw Jan’s mother walking in, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.”
