Last week, National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen captured terrible scenes of a polar bear starving to death. The viral video hopes to raise awareness for climate change.
Over the weekend, a video of a starving polar bear looking for food in Baffin Island, Canada, has sparked anger around the world.
National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen, who captures the footage, spoke about the terrible scenes: “We stood there crying—filming with tears rolling down our cheeks.” Nicklen’s video, which received over 3.5 million views, aims to raise awareness of climate change and its effects.
“It’s a soul-crushing scene that still haunts me,” Nicklen wrote. “But I know we need to share both the beautiful and the heartbreaking if we are going to break down the walls of apathy. This is what starvation looks like. The muscles atrophy. No energy. It’s a slow, painful death.”
