While Syria is in complete turmoil and destruction, a CNN news crew found themselves in a strange location where, it seems, the war hasn’t reached. Latakia is a city where families relax on the beach and eat at nice restaurants and at night go to party.

The CNN reporter explained how on their way to the city the crew passed Homs, a city in ruins where streets are empty and citizens are under curfew for the past several years.

Latakia is still under Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s control, safe behind a Russia Air Force base. There are no battles in the city and no refugees and even tourists can be found. It is the city from which the Assad family is from.

The Syrian war has led to an estimated 400,000 deaths. 5 million people have left the country and another 6.5 million are living in extremely difficult conditions inside the country. Since 2015, Russia has supported Assad, who refuses to give up his rule.
