After the White House earlier this week dismissed Prime Minister Netanyahu’s remarks that he and US officials had discussed the annexation of the West Bank, a senior White House official has said the incident is now ‘water under the bridge.’

A few days after an embarrassing diplomatic incident with the Trump administration over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s West Bank annexation remarks, a senior White House official says the good relations between the two countries were not affected.

Earlier this week, Netanyahu told Likud lawmakers in a closed-door meeting that the issue of applying Israeli sovereignty to the West Bank had been discussed with US officials. The publication of these remarks was followed by a vehement denial statement from the White House.

“Reports that the United States discussed with Israel an annexation plan for the West Bank are false,” the White House said then. “The United States and Israel have never discussed such a proposal, and the president’s focus remains squarely on his Israeli-Palestinian peace initiative.”

But on Wednesday evening, the official called the whole incident “a misunderstanding” and “water under the bridge,” saying it will not have any diplomatic influence.
