Senior US officials involved in the Mandalay Bay shooting investigation reported that Stephen Paddock’s girlfriend Marilou Danley was questioned by the FBI in order to gain insight into the gunman’s motivations. Meanwhile, Danley has released a statement that was read by her attorney. “It never occurred to me in any way whatsoever that he was planning violence against anyone,” said Danley in the statement. “I knew Stephen Paddock as a kind, caring, quiet man, I loved him and hoped for a quiet future together with him.”

In the statement, Danley claimed she did not see anything hinting at violent tendencies in Paddock. “He never said anything to me or took any action that I was aware of that I understood in any way to be a warning that something horrible like this was going to happen,” she stated.

Danley explained that Paddock bought her a cheap ticket to the Philippines about two weeks before the shooting so that she could visit her family there. “I was excited to go home and see family and friends,” said Danley. “While there, he wired me money, which he said was for me to buy a house for me and my family.” Danley added that she was grateful, but was worried that Paddock was breaking up with her.

“She was sent away. She was sent away so that she will be not there to interfere with what he’s planning,” explained Danley’s sister in an interview from her home in Australia. “In that sense, I thank him for sparing my sister’s life.”

“He’s a multimillionaire,” said Eric Paddock, the gunman’s brother. Eric described his brother’s affinity for gambling and cruises, but claimed he did not know about the existence of the automatic weapons.

64-year-old Paddock, a retired accountant, was married to a woman named Peggy Okamoto for six years. The couple divorced in 1990 and had no children. Peggy declined any interviews by reporters, but her brother told the press that he remembers Paddock as a “highly intelligent” man.
