On Saturday, MK Oded Forer vowed that in the upcoming months, his party, Yisrael Beiteinu, would make sure that the Knesset passes legislation to allow the death penalty for convicted Palestinian terrorists.
This comes one day after a Palestinian terrorist murdered two Israeli soldiers and wounded two others in a West Bank terror attack. Forer told a gathering in the southern city of Beersheba that the implementation would serve as a strong deterrent for future terrorists. Forer also accused Palestinian leadership of inciting to terrorism against Israeli civilians and soldiers.
Leader of Yisrael Beiteinu and Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman also made a statement proclaiming that he will be fighting for the death penalty for terrorists. After the attack on Friday, Liberman stated, “We will act to sentence the terrorist to death, to demolish his house and to punish anyone who was involved. There’s no ‘lone terrorism.’ It’s terrorism that is supported by Abu Mazen [Mahmoud Abbas] and the Palestinian Authority, which pays money to the families of the terrorists.”
Yisrael Beiteinu has long supported legislation permitting the death penalty for convicted terrorists and made the issue a central aspect of its 2015 election platform. The bill being pressed by Yisrael Beiteinu that would apply to those convicted of deadly acts of terrorism passed a preliminary reading in the Knesset in the beginning of the year.
